Workshop: Acrylic Painting Crash Course
It may sound weird, but, I know how much joy painting has brought me over the years, and recently, I've felt lead to teach others who want to learn how to paint. This past fall I had the pleasure of hosting my first painting workshop at the Sawnee Arts Center in Cumming, GA. The workshop was a one day Acrylics "Crash Course" that was designed for the new artist or the artist who had been out of the game for a while. I wanted to dig in a little deeper than the basic "wine and canvas" type classes and give students the "why" and "how" of painting. The goal was for them to walk out of the class at the end of the day and have both the confidence and encouragement to try painting on their own.
Our day was jammed packed, but fun! We started loosening up with a round of intuitive painting. Next, we talked about the basics of color theory, composition and value. We used this knowledge to work on a still life where we practiced drawing and painting techniques. Then, we moved on to my favorite - impasto painting with palette knives! This seemed to be the class favorite too. And finally, I snuck in a landscape painting demo at the end. After the class was over, I heard from several students who said they had a ton of fun and had started painting on their own. This made my heart happy! Take a look below at a few pictures from the class. This is just a glimpse of our day learning to paint with acrylics.
The SAA has a full schedule of classes that they are offering. I'll be adding more classes to the schedule soon such as Intro to Palette Knife Painting, Intro to Abstract Painting and Coffee and Canvas. All classes are taught out of the Brannon-Heard house which is a historic home in downtown Cumming, Georgia. I also host private "Paint Parties" where I bring the studio to you. These are lots of fun for bridal showers, church groups, book clubs, or just a ladies night get together. If you're interested, click here for more details.
